Notary Tales: The Day I Got Judged by Chickens...and why your porch isn’t the weirdest place I’ve worked.

So here's the thing: I’ve notarized documents in driveways, hospital waiting rooms, trunk lids, gas station parking lots, the loudest Starbucks I've ever been in, and once, during the biggest toddler meltdown I've ever witnessed. But the day I was silently judged by five full-grown chickens? That’s the one that sticks with me the most.
It was a porch signing. Simple, quick, everything in order. Except for the hens. They stood about six feet away the whole time. Not clucking. Not pecking. Just watching. It's like they thought they were guard dogs - or, guard poultry - with questions about my credentials.
The client didn’t even flinch. “Don’t mind them,” she said. Which, to be honest, didn't ease my mind in the least. Don’t get me wrong — I love the whole farm thing. I’ve got a little mini farm creeping into my own backyard. But chickens? Chickens can be a-holes. I don’t trust them until I know them.
Maybe they were just curious. Or maybe they really were sizing me up. Either way, standing there with five chickens staring me down while I notarized a will felt oddly intense. But that’s the thing about this job — even the simplest appointments can come with unexpected company.
Why this matters to you:
Because when people say “I just need a quick notarization,” they rarely mean under normal circumstances. Documents show up during chaos:
When you’re selling something, when someone’s in the hospital or when a family member needs paperwork notarized right now - And yes… sometimes, when your front yard is co-managed by livestock.
It’s not your job to figure out where, when, or how to get that paperwork signed. It’s mine.
The moral of this poultry tale?
Whether it’s your dining room, your tailgate, or your chicken coop...I’ll meet you where you are. You bring the paperwork, I’ll bring the pen and stamp - and a healthy respect for your judgmental birds.
